I know how it feels to always wait for the next thing to bring you happiness. As soon as you get the body you want you will be happy. As soon as you move into your dream home you will be happy. Or even thinking when you get your dream job you will be happy.
Can you relate? Seeking happiness everywhere but in the right now.
Happiness is right around the corner is a lie you tell yourself. Of course, there are things that will make us happy but we can’t allow our happiness to rely on these things.
You will never be happy with your life if you are always chasing the next thing to fill your ‘happiness’ void. You have to find contentment in your everyday life. Through the good, bad and even the normal days.
Happiness is not a destination.
Whoever said ‘the grass is greener where you water it’ knew what they were talking about.
I will let you in on a little secret… if you can’t find contentment in every season of life (right now) you will never be happy. You will always be looking for the next thing to bring you happiness. And once you get whatever it may be you might be happy for a little bit but you will still find yourself not content with life.
This is something I personally had to learn.
Focus on being content with life in whatever season you are in now. I know life can be hard and you want what is right around the corner. But why not find contentment in everyday life while you wait for whatever it may be?
You set yourself up for disappointment when you believe the lie that happiness is a destination. It is not about getting to where you want to be. It is about finding joy where you’re at now.
Learning to be content in everyday life will help you to actually enjoy life. Not wait for the next big thing to bring you happiness. It’s great to look forward to things but not to let your joy lie in those things.
How you can focus on being content with life.
Realize that contentment should not be dependent on what might come. Contentment is now. When you wait for happiness that may or may not come around the corner you are setting yourself up for disappointment. Once the new wears off or maybe it never comes you are left feeling the same miserable way.
Change what you don’t like
If you want to change something about your life that you’re not happy with have a plan mapped out that you can work towards daily.
Be thankful for the things you have now
People are quick to think of what they do not have. Thinking that if you just had whatever it may be that you will have happiness. Have you sat down and wrote what you’re thankful for? For what you do have? Take time to be thankful for what you do have. Train your brain to be thankful for the small things.
Love the process
If you want your dream body are you falling in love with being active or nourishing your body now? When you love the process of wherever you are trying to get in life you will enjoy getting there. And when you get to where you want to be you will actually have a happiness that does not wear off.
Don’t wait for the next thing around the corner to make you happy. Love the process and find things to be thankful for every day. And when there are things you do not like learn to work every day to change whatever it may be.
Being content does not mean bad things don’t happen but that we still find joy in life.
We all have bad days but when we work on these things we can be content where we are in life now.
Do you find yourself looking for the next thing to bring you happiness? How can you work on being content in your everyday life now?
